Are you passionate about animal welfare and community safety? We are looking for a dedicated Community Safety Officer - Animal Management to join our team at a local council based South East of the CBD. This is a Level 4 position where you will play a vital role in maintaining the safety and amenity of our city.

About the Role

As a Community Safety Officer, you will facilitate compliance with various Acts and Council By-Laws. You will act as an Authorised Officer under the Dog and Cat Management Act, Local Government Act, and other relevant legislation. This role is not just about enforcement; it’s about promoting responsible pet ownership and engaging with our residents through education and awareness programs.

You will work under general direction within a supportive, multi-disciplinary team, reporting to the Team Leader Community Safety.

Key Responsibilities

  • Compliance & Enforcement: Undertake inspections, surveillance, and investigations to assess compliance with legislation and issue infringements or notices when necessary.

  • Animal Management: Provide specialist advice to the public, handle animal-related issues, and foster community understanding of responsible ownership.
  • Investigation & Reporting: Collect evidence, take statements, and prepare detailed Briefs of Evidence for external bodies.
  • Community Engagement: Implement education programs and maintain a professional, helpful manner when dealing with the public.
  • Team Support: Provide operational back fill and support for Local Nuisance, Litter Control, and Bush fire Prevention roles during peak times.
  • Administration: Maintain accurate, contemporaneous records within Council databases to be used as evidence if required.

About You

We are seeking a self-motivated professional who thrives in a customer-driven environment. To be successful in this role, you will have:

  • Experience: Proven background in an investigative or compliance-based role, preferably within Local Government.
  • Knowledge: A solid understanding of relevant Acts (specifically the Dog and Cat Management Act) and the ability to interpret complex technical information.
  • Communication Skills: Advanced verbal and written skills, with the ability to negotiate and resolve conflicts in complex situations.
  • Technical Proficiency: Skilled in Microsoft Office and maintaining detailed electronic records.
  • Qualifications: While a Certificate IV in Local Government (Regulatory Services) is highly desirable, your practical experience in animal behaviour and field work is what truly counts.
  • Compliance: You must hold an unencumbered Australian driver’s licence and a current National Police Clearance.
